So, I’m back. And I have to tell you, it was an experience.

This was my first experience with this show, and after the two and half hour drive, the first thing that hit me was the view. As I am driving along this tiny tree lined switchback road that ran along the edge of a ridge, I rounded a corner and the view of the show opened up before me. Well, more to the right and below me, but anyway. All I could see were fields of cars and four massive white tents. I wanted to photograph it, but stopping the car there was a terrible idea.

So about fifteen minutes later, I arrived at the show and parked the car and then hiked a quarter of a mile to the tent. My first observation was concerning the irony of an arts and craft show, filled with 99% Caucasian women, listening to James Brown’s Say It Loud: I’m Black and I’m Proud over the loud speakers.

My second observation came a few hours later. The second observation was that standing on small gravel, in (roughly what is considered) a field, after driving two hours, makes your legs hurt. Here is the floor of the booth:

This is the worst flooring job ever.

So, what followed was a series of observations and lots of shivering and coffee. Oh, and constipation, don’t forget that. Observations such as: “The people who buy painted wine bottles filled with Christmas lights, are the same people who buy recreation wizard staffs/walking sticks.” This is how the final day of the show started:

It's 7:18am. Do you know where your kids are?

It's 7:18am. Do you know where your kids are?

Yes, that says 34°F.

At some point, on the second day, Le Duke fell asleep in the booth and I set a sign on him that read “Life of the Party”. I got mixed reactions from the crowd. Mostly, people asked “Is he real?”. People and their “Halloween” decoys. Now that’s silly.

I always make a list of things to bring to craft shows, and never bring any of them because I would get into trouble, but I make the list anyway. It passes the time. This show my “To Bring” list consisted of three items 1) a megaphone 2) a slingshot and 3) a remote controlled car or helicopter. These would get me into trouble and probably cost me a fortune in broken crafts.

I made a pretty good haul at the show. I ended up buying a handmade French pastry rolling pin made from Wild Cherry.  I traded mugs for mugs with Fire Branch Pottery and ended up trading with the other Ren sister for about two pounds of fresh bee’s wax with a little bit of watermelon honey still trapped inside of it. In bookmaking you use a lot of bee’s wax to wax your thread. Some people use different waxes, but I like the smell and consistency of bee’s wax.

Overall it was a good show. But the best part was coming home. Dark Wombat’s X-mas gift had arrived, my second letterpress had been delivered, my paycheck came in, and Pancake Land was waiting at the door to greet me. Best of all, after sleeping on a couch for two nights, was my bed.

So, I have updated the Daily Photographs and added a couple of new General Photographs as well. Which means that we are back up to speed. I think. I need to go get ready for school. It’s good to be back. I missed you guys. More soon. ~SC
