He's Like The Very Sad Batman.

Last night, Pancake Land and I started watching the first season of Angel. We could only stomach one episode last night. We recognize that Buffy started out God awful and only after the first ten episodes did it start to find its groove. So, we are prepared to endure this trial by fire. For at least 11 episodes. Right now, granted we have only finished one episode, Angel has only been established as a very sad Batman.

Gruff voice? Check.

Fights evildoers at night? Check.

Dark outfits? Check.

Underground lair? Check.

Gadgets? Check.

Mopey disposition and tendency to blame himself for everything that goes wrong? Check.

Yep, he’s like a very sad Batman.

(said in scruffy Batman voice) “I’m very sad Batman.”

Whereas Buffy was a symbol of feminine power, riding the last few waves of the Girl Power movement, Angel was a precursor to a generation of guys who have stupid haircuts and where “guyliner” and cut themselves and wear skinny girl jeans. I can get behind the stupid haircuts thing because everybody has had a stupid haircut, which at the time they rocked proudly. It is only upon the re-examining of photographs, years later, that one realizes, to their horror, that they had a terribly stupid haircut. I can even get behind wearing girl jeans. For me, I have always loved bell bottoms and it is insanely difficult to find guy’s bell bottoms these days. Even vintage ones. Why waste your time hunting guy’s flairs, when you can walk into any clothing store and pick up a pair of girl’s bell bottoms. Dude, even Wal*Mart carries flairs. What I can’t get behind is the whole openly mopey thing. Mopey is supposed to be reserved for the privacy of your own home. Drives me nuts. And for this, I blame Joss Whedon. He did this. And now he is making me suffer through yet another late 90’s television series based loosely on the occult and overly self absorbed and guilt ridden vigilantes. Awesome. Thanks.

Anywho, I feel surprisingly good today. I mean it is Monday after all. Perhaps the pressure to get things done has been released and I am feeling that today. Perhaps it is the fact that Le Duke is out of town and I don’t really have to go to work. And it’s President’s Day which means that I have plenty of people to go and play with if I so choose. You know what? I don’t care why I feel better. I am just glad that I do. How about that?

Well, I have rambled on enough for one day I think. I’m off to see the Wizard. More soon. ~SC
