Sandwich Control: Genius…

Comma hoarder period.

Today’s theme is: Henry.

So, here’s a funny story.

In the fall of 2008 I did a craft show with Pancake Land. It was her first craft show and I was pretty seasoned at them by then so I went along to help her out. It was her show. But I figured I’d make a few things as well to sort of help fill space on the table. I made a few cards and had the idea to make notebooks.

It was then that I learned that making books is deceptively complicated. Much more difficult than just folding some paper and stapling it together. But I figured I’d just muddle my way through and learn it as I went. So, being the prepared type, I prepped a fucking shitload of covers and bodies to make notebooks out of.

Needless to say, I didn’t make very many. And all that prepped paper went into a box and was forgotten.

In the Spring of 2009, I took a class called Fine Printing and Bookmaking. I saw the class advertised in the fall semester and being fresh on the heels of the failed bookmaking attempt, I signed up.

And then I learned about and fell in love with letterpress printing.

I also learned to make books. Which I also love.

Cut to today.

Or yesterday actually.

So, I am working on taking part in an upcoming and ongoing craft fair. I’ll have a small section of a booth, but I want to offer a bit more variety than my usual postcards and posters.

And that brings us back to notebooks.

My intention was to use a bunch of the test prints and proofs that I’ve amassed over the years as funky covers for the notebooks.

As I was cutting and folding a few prototypes, I remembered the box of cut and prepped notebooks from 2008.

And then I found the box.

As of right now, I have enough covers for 340 notebooks. That’s just what I have folded and cut. I have another giant stack that could easily be prepped.

And then the idea struck me. I now have the knowledge and skills to not only make the books, but I can also print silly things on them.

So, I’m going to spend my day messing with that.

I also need to tend my garden. My herbs are looking puny…

All right.

I’m going to get to it.

See ya’ Monday.

More soon. ~SC
