The Ghost Of Christmas Past.

Yesterday was a bad day. Nothing bad happened. I just felt really down for some reason. This nagging sadness loomed over me all day. I felt infectious. Like anybody I was around would be brought down into the funk. The worst part was that it came out of nowhere. Perhaps it is the realization that Grismas is going to be so different, so subdued this year finally sinking in. Whatever it is, it sucked. It culminated in one final weird thing at the end of the day. One very weird thing.
I was in Word to Me’s car. I was backing out of the driveway and preparing to return the car to her house. As I was backing up, I glanced into the rear view mirror. And there was Jenny standing in the carwash parking lot. Looking at me. Jenny has been dead for over six months now. At first I thought I had finally lost my shit. Then the little dog started walking around and I saw that it wasn’t really Jenny. It was just another dog that looked almost identical to her. I stayed put because the little dog had the look of a dog that is likely to run out into the road. So I put the car in park to try and prevent this from happening. As I was getting out of the car, the dog bolted across the road toward my neighbor’s house and was almost hit by a car. Strangely enough, the dog hid under the neighbor’s car and the car that almost hit it pulled into the driveway. A lady got out of her car and started try to lure the dog out by throwing bits of cheese or treats to it.
At this point I had to go try to help. I reached under the car and the dog barked and whimpered at me so I back off. The lady kept trying while I went to let my neighbors know why there were two grown ups crawling around under one of their cars. When I came back to the car, the lady had made no head way and was dialing her cell phone. As it turns out, she was the director of our local Humane Society. She was trying to get animal control on the phone to help us out. The last thing that either of us wanted was for this dog to get hit by a car. It was obviously not scared enough of cars to prevent it from running out in traffic. She talked to a guy and I begged off because I had to get the car back.
After I dropped the car off and ran a quick errand with Big D, he brought me home. The lady was still there. She said the animal control guy had had to answer an emergency call and would be there for a little bit. And then the dog just vanished. One second it was there and then it gone. It was the weirdest thing.
I don’t know what any of this means, if it means anything at all, but I just thought it was weird and worthy of repeating.
It was shortly after that all happened that this song popped into my head. Well, just the chorus really.
My back hurts this morning. It was probably that late night errand I did with Big D. Somebody donated 30 cases of diet Dr. Pepper to Jesus and I helped lug them in out of the rain. I should have stretched first.
Well, I’m going to go try and find something to do at work. Wish me luck. More soon. ~SC
