A Day At The Races.

Yesterday Teacher Sis and I went to the horse races down in Hot Springs. This is something that has been on the books to do for ages. Since way before Blue Ribbon Downs closed. So, about a week ago, we decided to just blow everything else off and go. And we did. Like I mentioned yesterday, we had to talk Prop Ninja and Zab’z into coming to stay at my house so that the heating and air guy could come fix the heater. Of course, we didn’t really have to twist their arms too hard.
“Hey 17 year old niece and her boyfriend, can I talk you into spending the day alone in my house? You can eat anything in the cabinets or fridge.”
Free food plus no adult supervision? It was a sure bet. Speaking of betting, I’ll get back to talking about races. So, here’s the track:
Isn’t it pretty? We didn’t stay up in this box area, however. We just went up there to see the track in all of its glory before heading back down to ground level. We wanted to have the sand from the hooves sprayed on our faces. (Didn’t really happen.) Plus, there were giant corned beef sandwiches and Mello Yello down on the first floor. Plus, you get to purchase all sorts of fun stuff. Like programs and wager tickets:
Let me just say that the rush of betting on a dark horse who comes out of nowhere in the back stretch and wins first place is amazing. Simply amazing. My first race I bet $6 across the board (meaning that I think that they’ll come in first, second, or third and have bet $2 on each place) on #10 “One More Week” whose odds were like 13-1 before the race and slowly got worse as the race grew nearer. Anyways, we were stationed in the last leg of the race, right by the track, and sure enough as the horses were passing us, #10 comes from like 6th place all the way up to first. Right outta nowhere. Brilliant. Teacher Sis’s horse #1 “Por Que” was running in first until my horse crushed hers (and saw it driven before it, and heard the lamentation of its women).
That’s the exciting part. Winning. Not winning is lame and not nearly as exciting. When you are not winning you start to notice how depressing some of the whole going to the horse races is. Like the people who are there because the need to win some money. Be it to buy meth or pay off a loan shark. You also notice how hard those jockeys whip their horses. You also notice that you just spent 6 bucks for about a minute of entertainment and then have 30 minutes to kill before you can do it all over again.
Overall, it was good time. Will I be planning a trip back? Probably not. If someone really wants to go, I’d go back, but not simply for my own gratification again.
In other news, my heater is working again. It got kind of iffy there for a little bit. But the parts that were needed were in stock at the warehouse and the repairman got it taken care of.
In other news, my oven is hesitant to continue working. I have to give it a little smack, ala Fonzie, to get it to come on and stay on. Speaking of baking, I just made some biscuits, so I’ma go eat them. Todays agenda is a restful one. Mostly stuff around the house. I’ve been running around like a crazy person for two weeks now and I’m not 20 anymore. Let’s hope I get some work done on the computer. Maybe I’ll take a nap. Anywho, enjoy your Sunday. More soon. ~SC
