“So don’t be talkin’ sideways.”

The word of the day is: Fungus.

[ fuhng-guhs ]
noun, plural fun·gi  [fuhn-jahy, fuhng-gahy], fun·gus·es.
any of a diverse group of eukaryotic single-celled or multinucleate organisms that live by decomposing and absorbing the organic material in which they grow, comprising the mushrooms, molds, mildews, smuts, rusts, and yeasts, and classified in the kingdom Fungi or, in some classification systems, in the division Fungi (Thallophyta) of the kingdom Plantae.
Pathology. a spongy, abnormal growth, as granulation tissue formed in a wound.
adjective
fungous.

If I had just sat still and closed my eyes, I would’ve fallen asleep.

That was my whole day yesterday.

Fortunately, or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, I didn’t have time to sit still.

I also didn’t have time to get another cup of coffee.

So it was really touch and go there a few times.

The biggest and most impressive part of the day was when I hunted down a replacement deck spindle for the riding mower.

Except it wasn’t for my mower.

It was for a Cub Cadet.

Which I do not own.

So I had to do a shitload of physics to get the pulley off the old spinde.

And then the one off the new spindle.

And then I Frankensteined them together to make the part I actually needed.

After that I put the mower back together again.

Then I mowed the backyard.

Because the grass was super tall.

And there’s more rain on the way.

Because science.

I snuck that giant clusterfuck of a mower repair into the middle of a fucking busy day.

Also, I used a lot of physics that I learned in college, so I felt like that class actually just paid off.

And I actually thought through solving how to tell which way to loosen the bolts on a mower blade.

The bolt will loosen the same direction the blade turns.

Because the force of the grass resisting being cut pushes against the blade and will tighten the bolt with use.

So just look at your blade and determine the cutting edges.

They’ll move forward to cut the grass.

Obviously.

So that’s the direction the blade rotates.

So that’s the direction to loosen the bolt.

It’s taken me forty years to figure that out.

And three minutes of innernet research to confirm it.

You’re fucking welcome.

I’ve got lots to do today.

Again.

And tomorrow I have a 5k.

Again.

See ya’ tomorrow.

More soon. ~SC
